DAZZLE

Zero-Energy Media Facade

A mediatecture artwork that transforms the half-kilometer-long facade of the San Diego International Airport Rental Car Center into a dynamic landmark mural.

The piece is inspired by dazzle camouflage, a type of naval camouflage developed by Norman Wilkinson and used in World War I. Using stripes and other patterns, dazzle camouflage visually scrambled the outlines of ships to protect them from enemy submarines.

The bold graphic elements are animated by color-changing film and are seen daily by hundreds of thousands of motorists on the adjacent Interstate 5 freeway.

Consisting of 2,100 e-paper panels, each autonomously solar-powered and computer-controlled, DAZZLE animates the entire building facade using sustainable, programmable technology. Each e-paper panel is orchestrated to collectively display animations that evoke water ripples, moving traffic, and dancing snowflakes.
