DAZZLE
Zero-Energy Media Facade
DAZZLE is a mediatecture artwork that transforms the half-kilometer-long facade of the San Diego International Airport Rental Car Center into a dynamic landmark mural. The bold graphic elements are animated by color-changing film and are seen daily by hundreds of thousands of motorists on the adjacent Interstate 5 freeway.
The piece is inspired by dazzle camouflage, a type of naval camouflage developed by Norman Wilkinson and used in World War I. Using stripes and other patterns, dazzle camouflage visually scrambled the outlines of ships to protect them from enemy submarines.
Consisting of 2,100 e-paper panels, autonomously solar-powered and computer-controlled, DAZZLE animates the entire building facade using green technology. The e-paper panels display animations that evoke water ripples, traffic, and snowflakes.
